He is best known for being the main general of the Union troops. This leadership position would lead him to become the 18th President of the United States.
He commanded the Confederate Army of Virginia. Eventually, he surrenders at Appomattox. In the terms of the surrender, he was able to provide food for his men and allow them to go home instead of being arrested for treason. He also wanted peace and healing after the war.
He is most famous for being the 16th President of the United States and leading the country during the Civil War. He helped the North keep fighting to defeat the South in order to keep the United States united. He worked to free enslaved people.
She was an escaped enslaved worker who used the Underground Railroad to escape to freedom herself. She returned 19 times to the South as a conductor to help about hundreds of enslaved people to freedom in Canada.
She spent the war years traveling from battle to battle to nurse the soldiers. Soldiers nicknamed her the "Angel of the Battlefield." She would later establish the American Red Cross.
This is the location where General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union commander Ulysses S. Grant to end the Civil War.
The final resting place for over 15,000 US soldiers. Many are unidentified.
Confederate troops positioned themselves on this high ground over Sunken Road during the Battle of Fredericksburg.
